So it was Chao Feng the Adventurer who was chosen to deliver the scroll.

She could fly high and fast and away from the village if the people threatened.

“I accept!” cried Chao Feng. “It will be an adventure!”

Wisely, Chao Feng did not sweep into Makai

and frighten everyone to death, as the Fierce might have done.

She glided silently on her great leathery wings

from the pinnacle of the mountains

and soared silently over the lodges by night.

In the morning, the warning scroll was in the center of the village for the people of Makai to read.

But the dragons did not know that there was a legend among the Makai

about the dangerous art of reading.

According to this legend,

one day a Makai man chanced upon a scroll

that talked of wonderful places

and cities far across the Wide Water.

His eyes, they say, grew large and glowed like paper lanterns on the festival of the New Year.

He trembled, they say, and died at once.

Some say of joy. Some say of fear.

Since that time, no one in Makai could read.
